IDEAL-IQ and BOLD MRI Assessment of Testosterone and Resistance Training Effects on Fat Infiltration and Blood Perfusion in Sarcopenic Rats
Motivation: Loss of muscle mass in sarcopenia leads to increased fat infiltration and reduced perfusion. The effects of resistance training (RT) and testosterone (T) propionate on these changes remain unclear. Goal(s): This study evaluates how RT combined with T propionate impacts fat infiltration and perfusion in a sarcopenic rat model. Approach: A controlled animal study with RT, T propionate, and combined treatments were conducted. IDEAL-IQ and BOLD MRI measured PDFF and R2* values, with histological validation. Results: The RT+T combination significantly improved grip strength, endurance, and muscle CSA, while reducing PDFF and R2* values, indicating enhanced muscle quality. Impact: This combined RT and T treatment demonstrates a potential therapeutic approach for sarcopenia, effectively enhancing muscle structure and function. IDEAL-IQ and BOLD MRI offer reliable, noninvasive methods for tracking these muscle changes in research and clinical settings.
