Asymmetric impairment of hippocampus in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus related with cognitive function
Motivation: o investigate the association between cognitive function and the asymmetry of hippocampal blood perfusion and hippocampal perivascular spaces (H-PVS) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM). Goal(s): To explore the direction of hippocampal perfusion and H-PVS asymmetry and their relationship with cognitive function in T2DM patients. Approach: H-PVS volume, hippocampal CBF are obtained. The relationship between general cognitive function and hippocampal imaging markers are performed. Results: The T2DM group had left H-PVS volume, and smaller left and right hippocampal CBF. Multiple linear regression showed general cognitive function correlated with left hippocampal CBF and left H-PVS volume. Impact: Hippocampal injury in patients with T2DM is asymmetry. H-PVS and hippocampal CBF are expected to be imaging markers for identifying general cognitive dysfunction. This may provide clinicians with important information for planning treatment strategies and assessing prognosis in T2DM patients.
