Assessing muscle deterioration in Duchenne muscular dystrophy using qMRI and muscle strength testing: a 12-month longitudinal study

Motivation: Research on the correlation between muscle strength testing and qMRI in DMD, and its effectiveness in tracking muscle degeneration, remains limited. Goal(s): To assess muscle strength degeneration in DMD patients over 12 months and verify the effectiveness of qMRI and strength testing in monitoring disease progression. Approach: Patients underwent MRI of the gluteal muscles to determine FF and T1, alongside muscle strength testing to evaluate hip flexion, abduction, and adduction. Results: This study shows a significant correlation between qMRI and muscle strength testing, especially adductor FF. Baseline FF of flexors, adductors, and abductors significantly predicts muscle strength changes over the following 12 months. Impact: Our study offers insights to help clinicians implement effective, personalized management for early-stage DMD.
