An initial imaging test of a portable 7 T cryogen-free MRI system

Motivation: The high cost, large footprint, and complex maintenance of Ultrahigh-field MRI make it less accessible to many researchers. Goal(s): Develop an affordable, lightweight, and easily maintained 7 T MRI system using cryogen-free technology for scientific research and industrial applications. Approach: A small-bore superconducting magnet with nested thin gradient assembly and thin RF coil are integrated into an MRI system with operable clear space. Results: The magnet weight is only 304 kg, with dimensions of 58 cm in length and 65 cm in height, allowing for flexible installation in the lab. Initial imaging generates high-quality images with a resolution of less than 50 μm. Impact: The ultrahigh-field, cryogen-free, portable, high-resolution MRI system will be an economical tool for researchers engaged in ultrahigh-field related studies. In the future, advanced spectroscopic and imaging functions will enable a broader range of scientific explorations.
