Altered static and dynamic functional connectivity in amygdala subregions in depressed type 2 diabetes patients

Motivation: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients with depression exhibit an increased risk of complications and mortality compared to those with T2DM without depression. Goal(s): This study aimed to examine the aberrant functional connectivity (FC) of amygdala subregions in depressed T2DM, both in a static state and as it fluctuates over time. Approach: Thus, both static and dynamic FC analyses were employed to investigate the intricate neural activity of amygdala subregions in T2DM patients with depression. Results: The depressed T2DM exhibited more extensive abnormalities in dFC compared to sFC, affecting regions such as the prefrontal cortex, temporal lobe, occipital lobe, and cerebellum. Impact: This study underscores the significance of dynamic fluctuations in comprehending depressive symptoms associated with T2DM, thereby offering valuable insights for clinical assessment.
