Breaking the EDITER Channel Barrier: Frequency Division Multiplexing for Affordable, Multi-Coil EMI Mitigation

Motivation: The performance of EMI mitigation techniques improves with more receiver channels, but this requires costly multi-channel consoles, limiting the accessibility and increasing the cost of low-field MRI. Goal(s): To develop the ability to record multiple EMI detector coil signals with a single console receiver channel. Approach: A low-cost solution was designed that uses frequency division multiplexing (FDM) to combine signals from three RF coils into one channel. Results: Using two EMI detector coils and the EDITER algorithm at 72 mT, the FDM approach achieved equivalent EMI reduction (95.55%) to a conventional three-channel EDITER setup (94.26%), with a single receiver channel. Impact: We demonstrate a single-channel EMI mitigation method using Frequency Division Multiplexing. This enables more cost-effective EMI mitigation by reducing the need for multiple receiver channels on the console.
