Evaluation of Synthetic T2FLAIR and DIR Sequences Compared to Conventional T2FLAIR for WM Hyperintensity Detection in Migraine Patients

Motivation: White matter hyperintensities (WMHs) are frequently found in migraine patients associated with increased risk of neurological complications. Conventional MRI is often insufficient for detecting subtle lesions, particularly in specific brain regions. Goal(s): The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of synthetic T2-FLAIR and DIR sequences in comparison to conventional T2-FLAIR for detecting WMHs in young migraine patients. Approach: Fifty young migraine patients underwent MRI scans using both conventional and synthetic MRI. Lesion detection clarity and sensitivity were compared and analyzed. Results: Synthetic MRI sequences demonstrated superior sensitivity and clarity in identifying WMHs, particularly in deep and juxtacortical white matter areas. Impact: This study highlights that synthetic MRI enhances WMH detection, potentially facilitating earlier intervention and mitigating long-term neurological risks in migraine patients.
