Investigation of Iron Deposition Metabolism in Alzheimer’s Disease in Hippocampal Subregions using QSM-MRI
Motivation: Iron accumulation and ferroptosis are implicated in Alzheimer's disease (AD), but their impact on neuronal volume in hippocampal subregions remains unclear. Goal(s): To examine the association between iron deposition and neuronal volume in AD hippocampal subregions, identifying imaging biomarkers. Approach: Using QSM and 3D T1-weighted MRI, we quantified magnetic susceptibility and volume in 24 hippocampal subregions segmented by FreeSurfer. Results: QSM and 3D T1WI identified several abnormal hippocampal regions of interest, which were sensitive to tissue alterations. Increased iron deposition in certain hippocampal subregions was accompanied by a reduction in volume. Impact: The reduction in volume (neuronal loss) coupled with increased iron deposition in specific subregions offers insights into the mechanisms of neuronal ferroptosis and serves as a reference for personalized treatment strategies.
