Quantification of cortical and subcortical integrity within clinically feasible scan time using a 16-Tx/64-Rx RF array
Motivation: Ultra-high-resolution quantitative MRI offers sensitive markers for detecting cortical atrophy and neurodegeneration in brainstem nuclei; however, it typically requires lengthy acquisitions that are impractical in clinical settings. Goal(s): We tested whether highly accelerated acquisition, using a high-performance head RF coil primarily designed for optimal cortical mapping, could achieve the accuracy needed for high-resolution quantitative brainstem imaging. Approach: High-resolution multiparametric maps were acquired with acceleration factors up to x16, using both conventional and advanced coil arrays. Results: With the advanced coil, high-quality qMRI data were obtained within clinically feasible times, enabling quantification of brainstem nuclei and characterization of cortical layers. Impact: This is an important step toward the clinical translation of ultra-high-resolution qMRI. The high sensitivity achieved in cortical and brainstem imaging makes the tested RF array a valuable tool for detecting early neurodegeneration at prodromal stages of AD and PD.
