A Novel Model for Dynamic Quantification of Oxygen Metabolism of Visual Stimulation at 3T

Motivation: Understanding relationship of two models, Yablonskiy and Haacke's (YH) linear model and Davis's power law model, for brain oxygenation metabolism. Goal(s): Develop a new model for quantifying CMRO2 changes without relying on calibration procedures Approach: Analyzing YH's linear and Davis's power law models suggests brain O₂/CO₂ ratios may remain constant between rest and vasodilation. We explore conditions where this occurs, potentially enabling CMRO2 estimation without calibration. Results: New model was validated by comparing M parameter and CMRO2 change calculations with the Davis model. We applied the new model to calculate dynamic CMRO2 changes based on BOLD and CBF data from 11 subjects. Impact: The reconciliation of YH and Davis models enhances our ability to interpret fMRI data and assess brain function accurately. Understanding their relationship is vital for dynamically quantifying brain oxygen metabolism.
