Full-automation of mapping perivascular space using DTI-ALPS – characterization using the moyamoya disease/syndrome

Motivation: Full-automated evaluation of PVS (peri-vascular space) was obtained using DTI-ALPS (diffusion tensor image along perivascular space). With MR data of moyamoya disease (with or without infarct), it provided a model to evaluate peri-arterial and peri-venous spaces. Goal(s): Moyamoya disease without infarct spared the peri-venous space. Change of arterial PVS may be invisible by DTI-ALPS. Approach: NODDI and T1-weighted images of 15 normal subjects and 15 patients with moyamoya disease were obtained using a 3T MR. Results: Lower ALPS indices of moyamoya group with infarction as compared with normal subjects suggested significant slower perivascular flow when moyamoya group without infarct showed no difference. Impact: DTI-ALPS detected the damage of PVS in moyamoya disease with infract, when DTI-ALPS was not able to detect the loss of PVS of arterial site in moyamoya disease without infarct.
