Quantification of the Vocal Fold Oscillations from 3D-isotropic Sub-millimeter Sub-millisecond MRI
Motivation: With state-of-the-art methods in voice research, visualization of the vocal folds (VF) is anatomically limited and quantification of spatial features is challenging. Goal(s): To develop a 3D MRI technique to image VF oscillations with sub-millimeter sub-millisecond resolution and to extract quantitative VF parameters. Approach: Zero-TE 3D MRI data of the larynx during singing was retrospectively synchronized with microphone data. From the dynamic data sets physiologic parameters were extracted such as VF contact area or vertical displacement. Results: VF contact areas of 28-47mm2 and displacements of -2-6mm were found. The glottal area waveform and a 3D model of the inner larynx surface were created. Impact: VF MRI provides valuable contributions to the measurement of the VF dynamics in vivo under diverse physiological conditions. After adaptation, the method might provide insights into the dynamics of other oscillatory structures such as the heart valves.
