Asymmetric thermal emission

We present strategies for tuning the asymmetry factor of thermal emitters. We first analyze the constraints on thermal emissivity imposed by reciprocity. We then present strategies for tuning both lateral and normal asymmetry. We present device designs incorporating electrically tunable materials to toggle between symmetry and antisymmetric emissivity patterns.

Abstract

We present strategies for tuning the asymmetry factor of thermal emitters. We first analyze the constraints on thermal emissivity imposed by reciprocity. We then present strategies for tuning both lateral and normal asymmetry. We present device designs incorporating electrically tunable materials to toggle between symmetry and antisymmetric emissivity patterns.
