Effective Real-Time Geomechanics with LWD Tools Helps Ensure Safe Drilling in Complex Wildcat Well Conditions

Abstract This paper explores the application of real-time geomechanics through logging-while-drilling (LWD) tools—gamma ray, resistivity, and sonic—in an exploratory wildcat well drilled under extreme conditions. The primary objective was to manage mud density effectively to help ensure safe drilling practices in the 12¼-in. and 6-in. hole sections, preventing major losses and controlling well flow amidst the challenges posed by the harsh environment. The drilling operations for the wildcat well involved continuous real-time monitoring using LWD tools to dynamically adjust mud density and flow rates, particularly in the 12¼-in. section. In the 6-in. section, maintaining a critical balance between static mud density (19.1 ppg) and circulating mud density (20.6 ppg) was essential to mitigate risks such as high gas influxes, losses, and stuck-pipe events. The real-time data provided by the LWD tools enabled the drilling team to make timely and informed adjustments, ensuring wellbore stability and preventing potential hazards in this high-risk exploratory environment. The implementation of real-time geomechanics played a crucial role in successfully drilling the wildcat well under extreme conditions, minimizing issues such as drilling fluid exposure, mud invasion, and borehole enlargement. Subsequent wireline logs indicated significant borehole enlargement, exceeding 10 in., underscoring the importance of obtaining real-time data during drilling. The LWD data was integral to formation evaluation and showed strong correlation with mud logging elemental analysis. Despite encountering high gas levels, loss events, and stuck pipe incidents in the 6-in. section, the well was drilled safely to total depth. The continuous adjustment of mud density and flow rates, driven by real-time LWD data, played a pivotal role in maintaining wellbore stability and averting major losses. This proactive approach ensured successful well completion and established best practices for future operations in similarly challenging wildcat environments. This paper introduces new insights into the application of real-time geomechanics with LWD tools in the challenging environment of an exploratory wildcat well. The effective management of mud density under extreme conditions offers a valuable framework for industry, contributing to the enhancement of safe and efficient drilling practices in high-risk settings.
