Illuminating Subsurface Complexity: Enhanced Seismic Imaging Through Directional RGB Sun-Shading

Abstract Seismic data visualization plays a crucial role in subsurface interpretation, particularly in the oil and gas industry. Traditional visualization techniques like sun-shading have been industry standards for decades, providing interpreters with tools to identify geological structures. However, these methods often struggle to capture the full complexity of subsurface features, especially in noisy data. This paper presents a novel directional texture approach that enhances the visualization of seismic data through multi-directional filtering and color fusion techniques. By decomposing seismic textures into directional components and recombining them using RGB and HSV color models, our method highlights subtle features that might be missed in conventional displays. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach through comparative analysis with traditional sun-shading techniques on real seismic data. The results show significant improvements in feature delineation, noise reduction, and interpretability.
