Effects Of Energy Drink Supplementation On Badminton-specific Physical Fitness Among Badminton Players
PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate the effects of different dosages of energy drinks supplementation on badminton-specific physical fitness in badminton players. METHODS: Ten male adult professional badminton players (20.11 ± 0.73 years) were recruited in this three-way cross-over, double-blinded study. The experimental design consisted of three treatment sessions in 3 sequences for each participant, including placebo, low-dose energy drink (1X), and high-dose energy drink (2X). The placebo and energy drinks were given one hour before the badminton-specific physical fitness test. Each experiment sequence was separated by a one-week washout period. A badminton-specific physical fitness test involved a badminton-specific footwork drill consisting of six points on the court (from point 1 to point 6). Each set consisted of 12 touches (two rounds), for a total of 15 sets and 15-second rest between sets. The time of completing each set were recorded. RESULTS: We found that the completion time of badminton-specific physical fitness test for placebo, low-dose energy drink group, and high-dose energy drink group was 28.30 ± 0.43 seconds, 29.38 ± 0.50 seconds, and 30.35 ± 0.50 seconds (p < 0.05), respectively. The high-dose energy drink group showed the shortest time of completing badminton-specific physical fitness test. These findings indicating that the badminton-specific physical fitness outperformed the placebo and the low-dose energy drink group. CONCLUSION: The results suggest that high-dose energy drink supplementation prior to badminton might be beneficial to enhance badminton-specific physical fitness performance among badminton players.
