Implications of post-humanism in nursing knowledge, attitude, and ability: A narrative review
The nursing profession is undergoing significant transformations in the wake of artificial intelligence (AI) advancements, raising concerns about the potential for robots to undertake nursing tasks. This shift presents challenges related to the risks of advanced technologies and technophobia within the field. The philosophy of post-humanism, which emphasizes the interconnectedness of humans, technology, and the environment, offers a framework that may help preserve the integrity of nursing as a discipline. This study explores post-humanism's implications for nursing education, focusing on nursing knowledge, attitudes, and competencies. A qualitative research approach was employed, utilizing a narrative review method. The review examined articles published since 2020 that included keywords such as "post-humanism", "artificial intelligence", "nursing education", and "implications", along with their Latin equivalents, sourced from reputable domestic and international databases. Thirty-eight articles were identified based on criteria including relevance to the research objectives, content appropriateness, availability, and publication prestige. Ultimately, 26 articles were analyzed through categorical analysis. The findings indicate that nursing can evolve by integrating post-humanist concepts, moving beyond traditional practices in conjunction with technological advancements. As informed by post-humanism, aligning with contemporary technological developments can mitigate the adverse effects on conventional nursing practices by influencing nurses' knowledge, attitudes, and abilities. However, ethical considerations surrounding these technologies warrant further examination. The study underscores the necessity for revising nursing curricula to incorporate emerging technologies in academic institutions. Additionally, nursing leaders are encouraged to facilitate change management by integrating new technologies into existing systems.
