Who needs Gilabertian dignity?
This paper asks what Gilabert’s account of dignity in Human Dignity and Social Justice adds to a more austere Kantian account. I argue that, unlike Gilabert’s, the austere view is not overinclusive of valuable capacities and the concomitant set of needs that ought to be satisfied; that it offers a more plausible account of political morality and political agency; and that it can get us Gilabert’s conclusions about exploitation, domination and socialism with fewer, less controversial premisses.
