A STUDY ON THE SOCIO-ECONOMIC PROFILE AND LIVING CONDITIONS OF OLD AGE HOME INMATES IN KOLLAM DISTRICT, KERALA

The increasing elderly population in India, particularly in Kerala, has led to a growing reliance on institutional care for senior citizens. This study examines the socio-economic prole of inmates residing in selected old age homes in Kollam district, Kerala, and evaluates the facilities provided to them. Five old age homes representing government, missionary, private, and NGO-run institutions were selected from a list registered under the Orphanage Control Board. A purposive sample of 50 mentally stable inmates (both men and women) was surveyed using a structured interview schedule. The ndings reveal that a signicant proportion of female inmates lack formal education and past employment, highlighting gender-based socio-economic disparities. Most institutions provide basic amenities, regular meals, medical support, and recreational activities, though facilities vary by type of ownership. Notably, 94% of respondents expressed satisfaction with life in the homes, citing companionship and security. However, a small number reported difculties in adjusting to institutional life. The study underscores the importance of enhancing care quality and emotional support in old age homes to ensure a dignied life for the elderly.
