A high impact-resistant target plate based on pre-protrusions design
Purpose In order to improve the impact resistance of the engine casing structure, the structural design was carried out to improve the impact resistance of the structure. Design/methodology/approach A target plate structure with pre-protrusions is proposed, which can improve the structural impact resistance. First, a high-precision simulation model is built to investigate the energy absorption pathways of the target plate. Subsequently, the target plate structure is designed with pre-protrusions based on the energy absorption mechanism, and the impact resistance of the structure is improved by increasing the amount of concave deformation and the maximum deformation deflection. Findings The results show that the critical penetration velocity of these new target plates is 30.7% higher than that of conventional flat plates with the same mass. Also, the impact resistance of this innovative target plate is improved in a wide range of parameter designs. Originality/value Engine rotor components are susceptible to fracture failure due to external impacts and material defects. Fracture fragments generated after the failure of engine rotor components will carry energy to impact the engine casing, threatening the structural safety. However, very few studies have focused on improving the inclusion capacity through induced structural deformation, so the potential of structural impact resistance remains unexplored. A novel target plate structure is proposed to substantially improve the structural impact resistance by inducing structural deformation through predetermined depressions.
