Optimal Sensor Placement for Monitoring Squirrel Cage Induction Motor Conditions Based on Sound Analysis

The damage to the bearing parts will affect the rotation of the rotor, thereby leading to the cessation of motor operation. Therefore, it is imperative to conduct Condition Monitoring (CM) continuously, in order to avoid severe consequences due to serious damage. The CM accuracy based on sound data is strongly influenced by non-machine sound because the sound signals are easily overlapped. Furthermore, the distance of the sound sensor provides an opportunity for the motor signal to overlap with the sound from other sources. This study aims to determine the CM of motor bearings by considering the distance of the sound sensor to acquire high CM accuracy. The sound frequency spectrum has been used to analyze the CM, while a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with an Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) has been used to determine the effect of the sound sensor distance on its accuracy. The result has found out that the distance of the sound sensor has a significant effect on the CM accuracy. The result from the Turkey test has showed that the sound sensor with a distance of 100 cm has obtained the best CM accuracy of 96.53%. Therefore, it can be used as an alternative to CM.
