Influence of ultrasonic vibration at different tensile deformation stages on the ductile fracture morphology of aluminum alloy

Abstract Ultrasonic vibration ( UV ) in ductile materials during its deformation, generates/activates defects which influences void `nucleation-growth’ processes and eventually control the dimple geometry on fracture surfaces. Experimental measurements of dimple geometry in 2D on the published fractographs of a series of AA6061-T6 specimens with differently superimposed UVs (with different amplitudes and times) during different tensile deformation stages (i.e., elastic, yield, plastic and necking) have been performed and correlated with the corresponding mechanical properties. This research investigates the relationship between fracture features and the material’s deformation response at different stages to elucidate the strong linkage between deformation and fracture. This study contributes to deeper insights into the ductile fracture micro-mechanisms of materials under the influence of UVs. Graphical Abstract
