Efficient Multidimensional Signal Processing Schemes for Heated-Dot Magnetic Recording With Multi-Layered Bit-Patterned Media
We explore methods of multidimensional signal processing which are applicable to a heated-dot magnetic recording (HDMR) system with multi-layered bit-patterned media (BPM). The proposed signal processing scheme detects each data sequence recorded on a single track of respective layers sequentially in order from the top layer to the bottom layer. Our signal processing approach for an HDMR system with triple-layered BPM is assumed to be a recording system with areal density of up to 7.5 Tdpsi. In the HDMR system with triple-layered BPM, we use systematic polarization-adjusted convolutional encoding and decoding schemes, two types of multiple symbol detectors and a single one-dimensional symbol detector. The effective transmission rate of the HDMR system using triple-layered BPM is capable of increasing three times that of the HDMR system with single-layered BPM. It is shown that the error rate performance of the HDMR system with triple-layered BPM gives a significant improvement over the HDMR system with single-layered or double-layered BPM by computer simulation.
