A FPGA implementation scheme for JPEG‐LS lossless compression based on frame difference method

For typical infrared grayscale images, the compression ratio of JPEG‐LS lossless compression algorithm implementation based on embedded platforms is usually around 2:1-3:1. To effectively improve the compression ratio, a JPEG‐LS lossless compression FPGA implementation scheme based on frame difference is proposed. By performing difference operations on adjacent frames of a video image sequence, a more sparse continuous inter-frame difference result image is obtained. Combined with high-low bit splitting strategy and gradient quantization adaptive coding, the continuous inter-frame difference result image is subjected to JPEG‐LS lossless compression, which can significantly improve the compression ratio. After decompression of the compressed code stream, the original image data can be recovered by accumulating it in sequence. The JPEG‐LS lossless compression scheme for infrared images has been implemented on an FPGA platform. Through verification, the compression ratio can be improved to around 3.82:1-6.21:1, and the processing frame rate can reach 250Hz. Experiments show that this optimized algorithm scheme can significantly improve the compression ratio while ensuring lossless data compression.
