Development of a Portable IoT-Based Air Quality Monitoring System

Air pollution is an issue of global concern which affects the environment and human health. Traditional air quality governing stations are generally accurate, but they are frequently stationary, expensive, and spatially scoped, making real-time on-location specific assessments challenging to obtain. This paper details the design and development of a low-cost wireless air conditioning monitoring system which incorporates PM2.5 sensors, GPS modules, GSM modules, as well as other gas sensors like MQ3, MQ5, and MQ7. The system uses an Arduino microcontroller which collects data such as hazardous gases like carbon monoxide, alcohol vapors, and flammable gases, processes the data, and transmits it in real-time with pertinent geographic co-ordinates. Due to the small size of the system, coupled with its ability to communicate wirelessly, it can be swiftly and effortlessly deployed in mobile and remote areas making the system hassle free. This new approach to air conditioning monitoring is less expensive than prior technologies and promise advancements in smart city development, public health studies, and environmental conservation. Future work will involve cloud integration aiding data visualization and analysis of long term trends.
