Mirizzi syndrome complicated by fatal sepsis. Case report
Mirizzi syndrome is a relatively rare condition that can lead to serious complications, potentially fatal if not diagnosed early and managed promptly. We report the case of a 54-year-old patient with diabetes mellitus and a longstanding history of biliary colic, referred to our center for acute calculous cholangitis secondary to Mirizzi syndrome, as confirmed by medical imaging. The disease rapidly progressed to severe sepsis. Despite the initiation of resuscitation measures and emergency surgical biliary decompression, the patient unfortunately died. This case highlights the critical importance of early recognition and timely intervention in Mirizzi syndrome. It also underscores the need to raise public and professional awareness of this uncommon but potentially life-threatening clinical entity. We briefly review the literature to enhance understanding and improve clinical outcomes.
