Optically controlled swimmers and micromachines

In this talk I look at the role of asymmetry in generating lateral optical forces in optically trapped colloidal particles. The lateral forces can be used as driving forces in optically driven swimmers, actuators and other microscopic light-driven machines. I will review different types of asymmetric particle, and look at the dynamics of clusters of swimmers and micromachines.

Abstract

In this talk I look at the role of asymmetry in generating lateral optical forces in optically trapped colloidal particles. The lateral forces can be used as driving forces in optically driven swimmers, actuators and other microscopic light-driven machines. I will review different types of asymmetric particle, and look at the dynamics of clusters of swimmers and micromachines.
