Top emitting perovskite LEDs and progress toward laser diodes

There has been steady progress toward laser diodes from thin film non-epitaxial materials, with the most studied options including organic semiconductors, colloidal quantum dots, and halide perovskites. We are testing halide perovskite LEDs and laser diodes under the high current density (kA/cm2) conditions considered necessary for an electrically pumped laser. Low electrical and thermal conductivity lead to Joule heating and voltage-induced electrochemical interface reactions, which present substantial challenges to operation at these conditions. In this talk, we will show progress toward a fully electrically pumped perovskite laser diode including work on top-emitting device platforms which are important for laser diode integration, and discuss future pathways to success.
