Recently, institutions have often been associated with a person's motivation to develop their non-academic interests and talents, not least in the higher education environment. In its development, there are institutional values ??that are transmitted to students as motivation, in addition to intrinsic motivation from within and extrinsic motivation from outside. So far, the rewards given to students have become one of the dominant driving motives; others say that governance and collaboration between institutions and students within the institutional environment of higher education affect achievement motivation. This student achievement also affects the quality of higher education. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to focus on the basic motivation that encourages students to excel and institutional efforts that can increase student achievement motivation using a qualitative approach. The results show that the need to develop abilities and measure self-efficacy is the main intrinsic motivation, in addition to the desire to make parents proud. Other than that, the reward is not the main motivation. Extrinsic motivation consists of the support of parents and friends, while gaining new connections appears after the achievement process is carried out. Institutional efforts are in the form of coaching, regulation, coordination, and socialization. This effort is carried out by transmitting institutional values through direct guidance and socialization to students, as well as coordination with faculty stakeholders. Another effort is to provide various facilities and financing as an institutional hygiene measure to support outstanding students. Keywords: motivation, institutional, student, achievement
