PBR-Based Approach to Digital Texture Generation for Traditional Embroidery

In order to solve the problems, such as the disordered arrangement direction of embroidery threads and the poor luster effect in digital embroidery textures. This paper proposes a method to generate embroidery materials based on the PBR method by studying the geometric structure of flat stitch, layered stitch, and random stitch, and combining the arrangement rules of embroidery threads on plants and animals. The arrangement direction of embroidery threads was dynamically controlled using Substance Designer software, high-quality PBR embroidery materials, Maya surface modeling, and Marmoset Toolbag baking techniques. Experimental results show that the roughness of the embroidery surface and the roughness of the fabric surface of embroidery materials produced by this method are close to real embroidery. In a double-blind test, the average score of material glossiness and arrangement direction of embroidery threads obtained by 22 embroidery artisans is 4.6 points better than the conventional scanning method. This method is a high-quality texture solution for digital clothing design and supports digital protection and inheritance of embroidery cultural heritage.
