Design and simulation of a reconfigurable photonic logic circuit on SOI platform

This paper presents the design, simulation, and layout of a reconfigurable electro-optical logic circuit using Synopsys OptoCompiler, enabling multi-stage electro-optical logic systems. The circuit modulates a laser source to perform AND, OR, XOR, and XNOR logic, explored using Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM) and ring resonator designs. The MZM achieved an 18 dB extinction ratio, prioritizing high extinction, while the ring resonator, prioritizing power throughput, yielded a superior 24.1 dB logic level separation. OR logic was implemented through incoherent photodiode summation. Functional verification confirmed the accurate logic operation for both designs. The ring resonator design resulted in a significantly smaller footprint compared to MZM, which is crucial for dense integration. This work demonstrates the feasibility of reconfigurable electro-optical logic for applications in optical computing and interconnects and provides a foundation for further electronic-photonic co-simulation.
