Study of the Propagation of Higher Order Mode Cluster-Guided Wave in Overlap Weld Joints
Higher order modes cluster-guided wave (HOMC-GW) has the advantage of identifying corrosion defects inside pipes, tanks, and pipe supports. The minimal dispersion and less affected by surface quality, as is the ability to choose the right modes for each subject to be tested. However, HOMC-GW has a limited spread across angular, perpendicular, and discontinuity medium. This study evaluates the propagation of HOMC-GW waves through non-continuous environments. Models with an overlap joint are constructed with Abaqus Explicit. The time domain from the simulation is converted to the frequency domain by the Fast Fourier Transform (2D-FFT). The stress magnitude contour, frequency domain of mode shapes, and waveform signal from defect detection are used to evaluate the propagation ability of HOMC-GW. The results showed that despite having a large joint size. However, the overlap joint provides very limited HOMC propagation capability. The results have been confirmed and are comparable to the experiment's results.
