A longitudinal parallel mediation model of psychological distress and life satisfaction following the 2023 Kahramanmaraş earthquake: The roles of resilience and social support

The current study, conducted in the aftermath of the 2023 Kahramanmaraş earthquake, aimed to investigate how individuals' psychological functioning evolved during the post-disaster recovery period by examining the longitudinal parallel mediation of resilience and social support in the link between psychological distress and life satisfaction. Data were collected from Turkish adults in two waves at three-month intervals after the earthquake (N = 226). The findings demonstrated that resilience and social support are longitudinal parallel mediators in the link between psychological distress and life satisfaction. The higher psychological distress predicted lower resilience and perceived social support over time, which in turn were associated with reduced life satisfaction. These findings indicate that post-earthquake psychological distress reduces individuals' perceived social support and resilience, ultimately leading to lower life satisfaction.
