Observations of MSTIDs in south-east Australia with a compact network of VI and QVI sounders
Atmospheric gravity waves (AGWs) generated in the troposphere have long been known to be a plausible mechanism for the generation of medium scale travelling ionospheric disturbances (MSTIDs) if the AGWs are able to propagate up to ionospheric altitudes. In this paper we describe an experiment to determine the speed and direction of travel of MSTIDs using a compact network of vertical incident (VI) and quasi-vertical incident (QVI) ionospheric sounders.Reverse AGW ray tracing techniques are then used to determine the source of the perturbing AGWs in the troposphere.
