Geographical Indications in the Amazon Context: An Analysis of the Potential of Parintins-AM
Objective: The objective of this study is to review the literature on Geographical Indications (GIs) in the Amazonian context, with emphasis on the municipality of Parintins, Amazonas. It seeks to analyze the potential of two emblematic products, the regional shrimp and the handicrafts linked to the Folkloric Festival, as candidates for GI registration, discussing their contributions to cultural valorization, territorial identity, and sustainable development. Theoretical Framework: The research is grounded in classical references on GIs, including the regulations of the TRIPS Agreement and Brazilian Federal Law No. 9,279/1996, as well as national and international experiences with certified products. It also highlights the studies of Viana (2025), who assesses the feasibility of a GI for Parintins shrimp, and Kimura (2025), who discusses potential GIs in Amazonas, focusing on local handicrafts. Method: This is a narrative literature review based on the critical analysis of dissertations, scientific articles, institutional reports, and official documents from INPI and SEBRAE. Data collection took place between March and May 2025, in academic repositories of UEA and UFAM, as well as in the SciELO, Scopus, and Google Scholar databases. Results and Discussion: The findings reveal that both shrimp and handicrafts from Parintins present consolidated notoriety, a strong territorial link, and socioeconomic relevance. However, challenges such as the lack of technical standardization, the absence of detailed specifications, and the need for collective governance still constitute barriers to formal recognition. Research Implications: The results indicate that GIs in Parintins may strengthen public policies, expand cultural and gastronomic tourism, generate income, and preserve traditional knowledge. Originality/Value: This study contributes to the debate on Amazonian GIs by uniquely integrating the analysis of shrimp and handicrafts from Parintins as potential territorial certifications, highlighting their strategic role in sustainable development and in enhancing Amazonian cultural identity.
