A comparative effects of <i>Cymbopogon citratus</i> extract on the biochemical and haematological parameters of Wistar rat

The study investigated the comparative effects of Cymbopogon citratus (lemon grass) extract on the biochemical and haematological parameters of Wistar rats in the context of urinary tract infection (UTI) and its impact on bladder health. UTIs are among the most prevalent infections affecting various populations, often leading to complications in the urinary system, including inflammation and oxidative stress in the bladder. C. citratus is recognized for its antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties, making it a potential therapeutic agent for UTIs. In this study, male and female Wistar rats were divided into four groups: a control group, a UTI-induced group, a UTI-induced group treated with C. citratus extract, and a UTI-induced group treated with a standard antibiotic, Ciprofloxacin. The experimental groups received either the plant extract or antibiotic treatment following UTI induction. Biochemical and haematological analyses were conducted to evaluate key parameters, including renal function markers, liver enzymes, white blood cell count, and oxidative stress indicators, to assess the therapeutic effects of C. citratus on infection related inflammation and oxidative damage. Results demonstrated that the C. citratus extract significantly improved biochemical and haematological parameters, reducing infection-induced oxidative stress and inflammation within the bladder, comparable to ciprofloxacin. The findings suggest that C. citratus extract possesses potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, offering a promising natural alternative for managing UTIs and enhancing bladder health.
