The effectiveness of advanced verbal counseling in managing adults’ asthma at various severity levels
Background: Asthma symptoms vary significantly among individuals due to varying degrees of airway obstruction and severity, with varying responses to asthma management and patient counseling. Objective The study aimed to evaluate and compare the effectiveness of advanced verbal counseling techniques in managing asthma at various severity levels. Methods A cohort of adult asthmatic, non-smoking patients aged 19–60 with varying asthma severity was collected from an outpatient clinic using Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) guidelines. At the baseline assessment, all patients underwent forced expiratory volume in one second to forced vital capacity ratio (FEV1/FVC), and GINA symptoms control assessment questionnaire. The patients were divided into four groups based on their asthma severity namely, mild interment, mild persistent, moderate persistent, and severe persistent. The groups underwent advanced verbal counseling for two months, with results assessed using FEV1/FVC and GINA symptoms control assessment. Results In terms of FEV1/FVC, it was found that in the 1st-month visit from the baseline, the mild intermittent group was superior to the severe persistent p=0.043 while regarding the difference between the 1st-month visit and the 2nd-month visit also between the 2nd-month visit from the baseline visit, the moderate persistent group and sever persistent group were superior to the mild intermittent group and mild persistent group with p values p=0.016, p≤0.001, p=0.010 and p=0.049 respectively. Regarding GINA control assessment the mild intermittent and mild persistent showed a superiority over the moderate persistent and severe persistent through the two months of counseling p=0.038. p≤0.001 respectively. Conclusion Advanced verbal counseling improved asthma control for all severe-ties, with mild intermittent and mild persistent groups showing superior control. Pulmonary function improvement became evident from the first month, and by the second month, moderate persistent and severe persistent groups were superior.
