The Heavy Construction Industry and the Transformation of the Reality of Architectural Projects Carried out in Brazil During the 1960s and 1970s

Objective: This study investigates the role of entrepreneurs, architects, engineers, technicians, and workers in the creation of new architecture in Brazil, focusing on the development of heavy construction during the 1960s and 1970s. The aim is to highlight structural transformations, the evolution of precast reinforced concrete, and the partnerships established between the Public Sector and Private Initiative. Theoretical Framework: The research is grounded in concepts related to the industrialization of civil construction, the introduction of precast reinforced concrete, and technological innovations. Theories on construction modernization and public–private cooperation are considered. Method: A historical and documentary analysis was adopted, supported by specialized bibliography, technical records, period publications, and recent studies that contextualize the sector’s transformations. Results and Discussion: The findings indicate that precast reinforced concrete, introduced by contractors and visionary professionals, boosted Brazilian architecture and engineering. The expanding industrial sector enabled the adoption of new technologies and construction practices, consolidating heavy construction as a landmark of national development in the 20th century. The data underlines the relevance of the interaction between technological innovation, economic growth, and cooperation between public and private agents. Research Implications: The study contributes to the understanding of the history of civil construction and modern Brazilian architecture, providing insights for reflections on innovation and partnerships in the contemporary context. Originality/Value: The study highlights the trajectory of heavy construction in Brazil, a subject rarely explored in its technical and social dimensions and demonstrates how the interaction between different agents consolidated significant technological and architectural advances.
