Distraction enterogenesis: effectiveness of experimental devices and clinical prospects

Objective. To identify perspective devices for distraction enterogenesis (DE) through analysis of their design, efficiency and complications. Material and methods. The PubMed, Google Scholar and eLibrary databases were screened regarding data on devices for experimental DE. Analysis included 25 articles. Devices were classified as intraluminal and extraluminal, controlled (retrievable) and uncontrolled. Results. Intraluminal uncontrolled devices increase intestinal length by 176% [114; 243] with the highest risk of abdominal complications. Intraluminal controlled devices are characterized by intestinal length increase by 69% [45; 80] with small risk of complications. Extraluminal devices provide a 100% increase in intestinal length in both controlled and uncontrolled versions. Conclusion. Optimal balance of effectiveness and safety required for clinical implementation of distraction enterogenesis method is typical for devices with possible rapid atraumatic removal regardless of localization relative to intestinal lumen.
