Towards Accessible Visual Field Self-Assessment: An Eye-Tracker-Assisted Virtual Reality Perimetry
Perimetry is a commonly used tool for Visual Field (VF) testing. The rapid development of clinically used perimetry has provided ophthalmologists and visually impaired patients with more precise diagnostics. However, as a medical device, the high cost and large size of traditional perimetry equipment restrict its availability to clinics. Virtual Reality (VR), as an immersive medium, has great potential to replicate real-life scenarios. With its ease of use and accessibility to the public, we leverage VR technology to propose an eye-tracker-assisted VR-based perimetry system. This paper details the process of bridging the gap between clinical perimetry and its VR counterpart, along with the advancements made possible through eye tracking technology. Our work offers an accessible visual field testing tool for public self-monitoring, which plays a crucial role in early disease prevention and serves as inspiration for other research efforts focused on transitioning real-world applications into virtual environments.
