Simplified Empirical Shadowing Model for System-level Simulation of Wireless Network

This paper proposes a simplified radio propagation simulation method for efficient design of reliable wireless local network. Services delivered through ICT equipment typically employ wireless local networks and therefore, it is necessary to construct a reliable wireless local network that covers the entire service area for ensuring stable service delivery. In designing a wireless local network, network simulation plays an important role to achieve the requirements. Raytracing simulation gives accurate results, however, its computational complexity will become huge if there are a large number of moving nodes in a simulation area. To reduce the computational complexity of radio propagation simulation, we propose a 2-step simulation method using an empirical shadowing model. We empirically developed a shadowing model by conducting measurements on how objects affect shadowing. Computational complexity is evaluated by simulation time, and it is shown that proposed method can significantly reduce the simulation time.
