Minimization of Transmission Losses Through Optimal SVC Placement Using Dung Beetle Optimization (DBO)
This paper applies the Dung Beetle Optimizer (DBO) to determine the optimal location and sizing of a Static Var Compensator (SVC) for minimizing transmission losses in a power system. Inspired by the food-gathering behavior of dung beetles, DBO is tested on the IEEE 30-bus RTS and compared with the Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA) across four case studies. The scenarios include identifying the best population size and iteration count, evaluating power loss reduction with different numbers of SVC units, and comparing DBO's effectiveness against WOA. The results demonstrate that DBO achieves a minimum transmission loss of <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$\text{5. 2 2 8 4} \text{~ M W}$</tex> with four SVCs, outperforming WOA which achieved 5.3250 MW under similar conditions. This confirms the superior performance of DBO in reducing power losses and optimizing reactive power compensation.
