Enhancing Intersection Safety through ISAC-Enabled Sidelink Communication in Next Generation Vehicular Networks
In future 6G networks, the integration of sensing capability in New Radio (NR) Sidelink is expected to play a crucial role in developing intelligent vehicular networks, autonomous driving, and smart infrastructure [1]. However, the simultaneous demands of sidelink-based communication and sensing on shared wireless resources present significant challenges in achieving both high sensing accuracy and reliable communication. This research focuses on a critical Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC) scenario: crossroad sensing. We investigate a resource allocation framework that enables a roadside unit (RSU) to perform sensing and provide vehicles with a comprehensive view of the intersection through Sidelink transmission. By analyzing the trade-offs between communication reliability and sensing accuracy, we propose a protocol that enhances safety at crossroads and reduces blind spots. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed framework in improving situational awareness and driving safety at intersections.
