Development of Small Wedding Attire Design Using Korean Traditional Hyungbae
This study developed a small wedding attire design incorporating a traditional Korean Hyungbae, drawing on prior research and a case study analyzing 1,278 product images from 10 brands. In small wedding attire, dresses were the most common items, but multi-piece sets that combined various items were also suggested, enhancing practicality and styling flexibility. The most common silhouette was the hourglass-shaped X-line, though mermaid and A-line were also popular. Colors ranged from monotone and pastel to dark, vivid, and multi-tone, with white and beige being most dominant. Frequently used materials included soft fabrics such as lace, crepe, tulle, and satin, alongside stiff materials like mikado, taffeta, organza, and jacquard. Lace and crepe were particularly common. In terms of length, full-length and floor-length were most prevalent, and mini-lengths were also found in many brands. Sleeve length were mostly short sleeves, followed by tube tops, indicating a trend toward arm-revealing designs. Based on these findings, a new wedding attire was designed as a layered set featuring a blouse over a dress to expend styling options. The silhouette followed the consumer-preferred X-line, and the length was set to maxi to address its relative scarcity in current offerings. A tube top was chosen in line with case study trends and white was selected for its high usage and consumer preference. The blouse used silk organza, while polyester taffeta was used for the dress to enhance practicality. The Hyungbae decoration included a delicately embroidered Danhak, symbolizing nobility and a new beginning. Complementary motifs—Unmun, Samsanmun, and Padomun—expressed aspirations for an ideal married life and eternal constancy of marital bond.
