ПРОБЛЕМА ПЕРЕВОДА НАЗВАНИЯ «ПРЕСТУПЛЕНИЕ И НАКАЗАНИЕ» НА АНГЛИЙСКИЙ ЯЗЫК
The article is devoted to the problem of translating the title of F. M. Dostoevsky's novel "Crime and Punishment" into English. The article examines the similarities and differences in the concepts of "crime" and "punishment" in English and Russian. It is noted that when translating the title as Crime and Punishment, a significant semantic component contained in the original Russian title is lost. The convergence of the meanings of "to do a crime" and "to trespass”/”to transgress"/"to step over", "punishment" and "council"/"testament" to someone is fundamentally important for understanding the author's position and the idea of this work of art. In English, unlike Russian, the convergence of the meanings of "to do a crime" and “to trespass”/”to transgress”/"to step over", as well as "punishment" and "council" / "testament" in the proposed translation is not observed, and therefore there is a need for additional linguistic commentary.
