Optimizing Site Selection of Shale Gas in Southern Sichuan Basin: A Numerical Screening Approach

Abstract The Sichuan Basin’s shale gas industry has reached a phase of extensive and profitable development, significantly increasing the workload for well deployment. There is an escalating need to reduce both financial costs and project timelines. Given the intricate terrain and the delicate ecological conditions prevalent in the mountainous regions of the Sichuan Basin, it is imperative to conduct comprehensive field works prior to finalizing well locations. To this end, a grading system has been established on the basis of map digitization. The system is anchored on three pivotal criteria: Firstly, an evaluation of terrain suitability that encompasses factors such as ground slope, the presence of flat expanses, and elevation variability. Secondly, an assessment of facility prohibitions, particularly focusing on the existence of non-demolishable structures that could impede well placement. Thirdly, a consideration of environmental parameters, including the proximity and quality of water sources and the state of transportation infrastructure. The integration of these assessments enabling a more efficient approach to identifying optimal well sites, thereby diminishing the reliance on labor-intensive field surveys. This work rectifies the deficiencies inherent in traditional indoor design practices by offering a refined and precise methodology for well site selection. The innovative methodology bolsters the productivity of indoor design efforts and mitigates the economic burden of field investigations. The outcome is a more efficient, cost-effective, and ecologically considerate approach to shale gas well deployment in the Sichuan Basin, paving the way for sustainable and scalable development within the industry.
