Multi-Mode Vertical Coupler Using Inverse Design

In this work, we demonstrate two inverselydesigned free-space couplers optimized for vertical coupling. The devices are able to couple multi-mode Hermite-Gaussian beam to on-chip waveguides with strong coupling efficiency, broad bandwidth, and low crosstalk, demonstrating potentials of spatial mode-division (de)multiplexing for further scalability and parallelism in photonic information transfer/processing applications.

Abstract

In this work, we demonstrate two inverselydesigned free-space couplers optimized for vertical coupling. The devices are able to couple multi-mode Hermite-Gaussian beam to on-chip waveguides with strong coupling efficiency, broad bandwidth, and low crosstalk, demonstrating potentials of spatial mode-division (de)multiplexing for further scalability and parallelism in photonic information transfer/processing applications.
