A Modular Local Supervisory Control Approach for Microgrids Power Management System Design with Hardware-in-the-Loop Validation

This paper presents an implementation strategy for Power Management Systems (PMSs) for microgrids (MGs) using supervisory control theory (SCT). More specifically, the present design utilizes the modular local approach for synthesizing essential functionalities of the PMS, including peak shaving and load shedding. Additionally, the design guarantees the State of Charge (SOC) of the Battery Energy System (BESS) within safe values and coordinates its operation to supply power to the grid during low-power periods. The approach is validated through a case study using a Hardware-In-the-Loop implementation with a Raspberry Pi 5 and a real-time simulator OPAL-RT.
