An approach to shape-morphing device design using elements with large in-plane deformation capabilities

Abstract Shape-morphing devices provide potential solutions in various domains, from human-machine interfaces to aerospace engineering and architecture. In this paper, we propose an approach for the design of shape-morphing devices using elements with large in-plane deformation capabilities and sufficient out-of-plane support stiffness. Correspondingly, a deformation control method is established as a theoretical basis for such a new type of shape-morphing device. Finally, a prototype of the shape-morphing device was designed as illustration and verification.

Abstract

Abstract Shape-morphing devices provide potential solutions in various domains, from human-machine interfaces to aerospace engineering and architecture. In this paper, we propose an approach for the design of shape-morphing devices using elements with large in-plane deformation capabilities and sufficient out-of-plane support stiffness. Correspondingly, a deformation control method is established as a theoretical basis for such a new type of shape-morphing device. Finally, a prototype of the shape-morphing device was designed as illustration and verification.
