Dynamics simulation and analysis of scotch yoke mechanisms with opposed dual-piston and inclined slot configurations using ADAMS

Abstract The crank-connecting rod mechanism is widely used for power conversion in engines, compressors, pumps, and other machinery. However, inherent limitations arising from its structural characteristics have prompted extensive research into its improvement or replacement. The Scotch yoke mechanism serves as one alternative to the crank-slider mechanism. This study first introduced the Scotch yoke mechanism, followed by a mathematical model demonstrating its efficiency advantages over conventional crank-slider mechanisms. Subsequently, we employ Adams software to establish virtual prototypes and conduct dynamic simulations of both the standard Scotch yoke mechanism, the Opposed Dual-Piston Scotch yoke, and a novel variant with an inclined yoke slot. We have a comparative analysis of key parameters such as output torque, friction characteristics, Mechanism service life, and mechanical efficiency during operation. The quantitative relationships between certain design parameters and performance metrics were established. The influence of different lubrication methods on the friction characteristics of the Scotch yoke mechanism was also analyzed. The findings provide theoretical support for optimizing the Scotch yoke mechanism.
